Can you avoid getting a Root Canal?

Root canals are a common dental procedure performed on millions of people throughout each year. But is there some way of preventing or avoiding this procedure? It’s a difficult question due to the different possibilities that can lead someone towards needing an endodontic procedure.

The main way to avoid the need of a root canal is take have great dental hygiene and have regularly scheduled dental checkups (about every six months). Brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly to prevent the bacteria from causing any sort of infection or cavity that would inevitably lead to a root canal treatment (RCT).

Cavities are one of the main culprits to the cause of root canals. If your dentist detects a cavity it should be filled and treated right away. If you leave a cavity unfilled for a long time it will gradually grow bigger and can lead to an abscessed tooth which needs a root canal to get back to health. The earlier a cavity is caught the better!

If you experience any tooth pain be sure to get it checked out immediately.

Other common causes for needing a root canal treatment (RTC) are:

  • Deep decay
  • Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
  • Recurrent decay
  • Crack or chip in the tooth
